1912–2008 - William Pearly Oliver (1912-1989) and Pearleen Oliver (1917-2008)

Reverend Dr. William Pearly Oliver and his wife Dr. Pearleen (Althea Pearleen) Oliver were influential Baptist ministers and community leaders whose lives significantly shaped the African United Baptist community and social justice work in Nova Scotia. William Oliver served as pastor of the Cornwallis Street Baptist Church in Halifax – the “Mother Church” of the African United Baptist Association (AUBA) – and spent more than fifty years in ministry across several Baptist congregations. His leadership extended beyond the pulpit into civil rights advocacy: he co-founded the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the Black United Front, and the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, and supported Viola Desmond’s legal appeal against racial segregation. Pearleen Oliver was a powerful voice for educational access and racial equality, advocating against discrimination that barred Black students from nursing programs and documenting Baptist and Black history in Nova Scotia. Her leadership within the Baptist community included co-leading Cornwallis Street African Baptist Church and founding initiatives for women in the AUBA.
