During the war, hundreds of thousands of acres of reserve land was expropriated by the Canadian government to grow food. In 1919, the Soldier Settlement Act passed ownership of much of this land to non-Indigenous veterans who received grants of land for farming upon coming home. Many Indigenous veterans who applied for the same Veterans Benefits were instead simply given a certificate to use reserve land… which already belonged to their bands and communities.
