2021 - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation observed for the first time (September 30)

Orange Shirt Day, which began as a grass roots movement in 2013 in Williams Lake, BC, was recognized as a federal statutory holiday in 2021. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is now observed annually as a way to remember and honour residential school survivors and the children who never came home, and to encourage the ongoing work of truth and reconciliation.
