1716 - Mission to the Mi’kmaq established at Antigonish

In 1716, Antoine Gaulin, a French priest who had been serving as a missionary among the Mi’kmaq since 1702, founded a mission at Antigonish with the goal of inducing the Mi’kmaq people to settle in one place and begin farming the land. Within a year, the mission was large enough for its first church to be approved and built.
