In 1985, the Mi’kmaq people reclaimed their right to decide how children and families were provided for in their communities by founding the Mi’kmaq Family & Children’s Services. The goal was to provide wellness services grounded in Mi’kmaq culture and teachings in spaces that allowed families and children to heal and grow together. Federal law providing for this kind of care in other Indigenous communities across the country would not be passed until 2019.
