1997 - Last residential school in Canada closes – Kivalliq Hall in Rankin Inlet, which is now Nunavut 

Kivalliq Hall, which operated as a student residence from about 1985 until its closure in 1997, is now recognized as the last federally involved residential-school-style institution in Canada. Its closing meant that the era of large federally funded boarding institutions for Indigenous youth formally ended in Canada, yet the legacy of separation, cultural loss and intergenerational trauma in Inuit communities continues to echo deeply.
