1967 - Shubenacadie Residential School closes – Only Residential School in Nova Scotia 

When the Shubenacadie Residential School closed in 1967, decades of forced assimilation via residential schools ended. However, Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey communities were left to confront deep intergenerational trauma while beginning long, ongoing efforts toward cultural reclaiming and healing.
