1894 - Attendance at Indian Residential Schools becomes compulsory in Canada 

In 1894, an amendment to the Indian Act authorized the federal government to enforce compulsory attendance at residential schools. Specifically, it added regulations allowing the Department of Indian Affairs to require school attendance, appoint truant officers, and legally compel parents or guardians to send their children to designated schools.
