1951 - Federal government passes revisions to the Indian Act

In 1951, amendments to the Indian Act lifted some of the more severe restrictions on Indigenous customs and culture. The right to practice ceremony was restored, it was no longer illegal for First Nations to organize politically and hire legal counsel, and the list of administrative duties that could be transferred directly to local bands was expanded. At the same time, however, federal control over Indian status was tightened with the introduction of a centralized Indian Register.
