2018 - Cornwallis Street Baptist Church changes its name

General Edward Cornwallis was the founder of Halifax who, in 1749, issued the scalping proclamation that sparked the Anglo-Mi’kmaq War. After learning about this oppressive history in conversations following the TRC, members of the historic Baptist church voted to change its name to New Horizons Baptist Church in May 2018. “The intent of the name change is to identify ourselves by a name that better reflects the church’s values,” reflected their pastor. “The change also supports our First Nations sisters and brothers in their continued efforts to educate the public regarding the violence and mistreatment they have endured, as we all become more mindful of those we choose to honour and celebrate in history.”
