1816 - Charles Tupper works to strengthen Baptist churches in Atlantic Canada

Charles Tupper (1794-1881) was baptized in May 1815 and began preaching the very next year, following in the footsteps of his mentor, Edward Manning. For the next 55 years, Tupper played a key role in strengthening Baptist churches and institutions in Atlantic Canada, holding pastorates in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. His son – also Charles Tupper (1821-1915) – would go on to serve as the Premier of Nova Scotia, a Father of Confederation and, briefly, as the sixth Prime Minister of Canada. As a family, the Tuppers supported Acadia College (now University), promoted education for ministers, and championed religious freedom. Their leadership helped elevate Baptists’ social and political influence within Maritime and Canadian society.
