John came to Acadia after 20 years of pastoral ministry. He served in Toronto in 1994 as the Interim Pastor of Walmer Road Baptist Church and then for seven years as the Senior Pastor of Donway Baptist Church. From 2001-2014, John then served as the Senior Pastor of Kentville United Baptist Church in Nova Scotia. Now at Acadia, John is focusing on equipping and accompanying students in deep spirituality and vitality in ministry for God’s kingdom.
With his birth and early years in India, John has an appreciation of diversity, spicy curry, and God’s global mission. Having lived in three provinces, he realizes some of the joys and challenges of ministry in various Canadian contexts. John’s teaching has been enriched by different denominational approaches to spirituality, worship, and preaching. Inspired by wise ones journeying with him, John has accompanied others as a personal discipler, small group facilitator, pastoral mentor, congregational health coach, and a spiritual director. John’s ongoing learning has been enhanced by various networks, such as being on the National Advisory Group for Natural Church Development in Canada. He is currently involved in Selah, a Spiritual Direction Certificate Program for Ministry Leaders that is intentionally Trinitarian in theology, contemplative in style, and biblical in grounding.
John has facilitated courses, classes, workshops, and retreats in such areas as spiritual formation, spiritual gifts and calling, church health principles, marriage preparation and enrichment, preaching and worship, and various practical ministry topics. John’s Doctor of Ministry thesis examined several years of their congregation putting into practice church health principles in light of Romans 12 and Trinitarian theology.
John appreciates canoeing, camping, walking, and other ways of enjoying God’s beautiful creation with his family. John delights in being the husband of Catherine, the Dad of Rachel, Nathan, and Samuel, and a follower of Jesus.
