A legacy gift is a charitable donation planned for today through your will or trust. Upon your death, the estate makes the donation according to your instructions.
Generation after generation of Christians have worked together to serve Christ’s mission in the world, and the Church has been sustained by their devoted commitment.
You too have participated in this ongoing ministry as you have given of your time, energy, and resources in serving the Lord. Like many people, you want Christian service to continue beyond your lifetime. With a legacy gift, you can support that future.
Current Canadian tax rules make it advantageous to gift various types of publicly-listed securities to charities like Acadia Divinity College. Your gifts of shares, capital stocks, units of Canadian mutual funds or other securities are exempt from the capital gains tax that typically applies to the sale of a security. You also receive a tax receipt for the full fair market value of the donation. To transfer a gift of listed securities, download our transfer form and instructions, or contact the Development Office.
Support for ADC does not always take the form of a financial contribution. Donations of physical assets such as artwork, books, real estate, equipment, or other tangible personal property may also assist the College in supporting our mission. These assets may either be used as appropriate or sold with the cash proceeds utilized. A tax receipt for the fair market value on the date that the gift is received by ADC (to be determined by one or more professional appraisers) will be issued. Please note that a gift of professional services does not qualify for a tax receipt under The Canadian Income Tax Act.
With a gift of life insurance, you can often make a larger donation than might be possible in your lifetime, at a fraction of the out-of-pocket cost. Depending on how your gift is structured, you will also receive tax benefits now or through your estate. Contact us for more information.
Alumni: Under the Canada-United States Income Tax Convention (Article XXI (5)), a resident of the United States is entitled to a charitable deduction for gifts to a Canadian university, provided he or she or a family member is or was enrolled at the university. A family member is defined as a spouse, child, grandchild, parent, or sibling. A Canadian tax receipt will be issued, which can be used for U.S. income tax benefits in the same manner and amounts as if those contributions were made to domestic U.S. charitable organizations.
Non-Alumni: A Canadian tax receipt will be issued for your gift. If part of your income stems from Canadian sources, and you will be filing your tax return with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), you can use your tax receipt on your claim. It is always a good idea to check with your financial planning and legal advisors to get a complete list of your options. For more information, please contact the Canada Revenue Agency.
