About the Lectures

The 2025 Hayward Lectures welcome Dr. R. Walter Moberly, Emeritus Professor of Theology and Religion at Durham University and a leading scholar in the theological interpretation of Scripture.

In these three lectures, Dr. Moberly will explore what it means to read and use the Bible responsibly in today’s shifting cultural and intellectual landscape. Contemporary approaches often focus on ideological or ethical concerns, raising pressing questions about the nature of biblical authority and its role in shaping Christian faith.

Dr. Moberly invites us to return to the central question: if God is the reason for the Bible’s enduring significance, how do we speak truthfully about God without distorting or emptying that language? These lectures will examine the character of interpreters themselves, the importance of a “rule of faith” in guiding our reading, and the meaning of “truth” in both biblical texts and modern lives.

Through biblical case studies and engagement with influential modern figures, Dr. Moberly will challenge us to consider how the Bible can continue to inform faith, truth, and faithful living today.
