Is Atlantic Canada as welcoming as we think? A new book from Acadia Divinity College (ADC) faculty explores this question and more.
East Coast Hospitality: Myth or Reality? is the latest volume in our East Coast Theology series, offering thoughtful reflections on the cultural myths, and the Christian call, of hospitality in Atlantic Canada today.
About the Book
Edited by Dr. Melody Maxwell, the book brings together diverse voices from ADC’s faculty, each examining the concept of hospitality through their unique academic lens.
“Working with my talented colleagues on this project was a gift,” shared Dr. Maxwell. “It was energizing to see how each author approached the topic from their discipline, yet our reflections came together around a common theme: the need for authentic Christian hospitality, especially toward newcomers.”
From biblical reflections on the Lord’s Supper and Paul’s letters, to insights on congregational life, health, education, and public witness, the chapters challenge readers to move beyond assumptions and embrace a deeper, more intentional practice of hospitality in churches and communities.
Why It Matters
With newcomers arriving from across Canada and around the world, the book asks timely questions: Is the famed friendliness of Atlantic Canadians more than surface-level? How can the Church respond with grace, welcome, and imagination?
