It is always exciting to hear about the success of our alumni. This is especially true when they have signed a multi-book deal with a New York-based publishing company. Wade White graduated from Acadia Divinity College with an M.Div. (1997) and an MA (1999). For the last three years Wade has been teaching the introductory and second year Hebrew language courses at ADC. Among many other endeavours, he has also written a book for readers in the middle grades and is now working on its sequel.
The Adventurer’s Guide to Successful Escapes and its sequel, The Adventurer’s Guide to Dragons (and Why They Keep Biting Me) are set in a world where fantasy meets science fiction and a subversive narrator lurks behind every page. Intrepid heroine Anne must triumph over time, destiny, and heretofore unknown levels of bureaucracy to uncover the truth of her quest. Although the book is not classified as Christian fiction, Wade expects that readers will notice certain Christian-related themes.
Wade’s interest in writing began at a young age; he even attempted writing a book at the age of 12! Wade especially enjoys books by British authors and was influenced by the Harry Potter series, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and the Canadian classic, Anne of Green Gables. It is no coincidence that his main character’s name is Anne.
Wade began to work on short stories and screenplay writing in 2001 and in 2013 realized that he needed to be more serious about his writing if he wanted to pursue it as a career.
It took approximately four-and-a-half months for Wade to write the first draft of the first book. After three drafts and several edits, he deemed it ready to send out into the world. Then began a nine-month search for an agent and several more months of editing, until the book eventually sold to Little Brown Books for Young Readers, a New York-based publisher
Wade hopes that the book will be read by many, especially by younger teens who are his targeted audience, and that it will be the start of his career as a full-time author.
