The Reverend Dr. Allison Albert Trites is a native of Fredericton, New Brunswick. He earned his BA degree in Philosophy and History with honours from the University of New Brunswick. After earning two divinity degrees in the United States, Allison received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford in 1968. His dissertation was published in Cambridge University Press’s distinguished Society of New Testament Studies Monograph series. Dr. Trites was appointed to the Faculty of Theology of Acadia University in 1965.

Along the way, Dr. Trites collected a number of awards and fellowships. Some of these awards were presented by the Lilly Foundation, the Beaverbook Overseas Scholarship, the American Philosophical Society, the Canada Council Leave Fellowship, and the O’Brien Foundation.

In 1966 Allison married Miss Eugenie Gill of Lancashire, England. In the years following, they became the proud parents of sons, Jonathan and Ian. Allison and Gene became pillars of the Wolfville community, taking active part in a number of civic functions and charities. For decades, both served Acadia and the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches in a number of capacities. Few couples are better known in Wolfville and in the Acadia community.

Dr. Trites has held membership in many scholarly societies, including the Society of Biblical Literature, the Institute for Biblical Research, and the prestigious Society of New Testament Studies. In recent years, he has served as one of the Directors of the Atlantic Society for Biblical Equality, and as a Governor of both the Canadian Bible Society and Crandall University.

Over the years Dr. Trites’s academic career flourished, as seen in many scholarly publications, sabbatical leaves and appointments at other schools, including Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and United Theological College in Aberystwyth, Wales. Two scholarly books, or Festchriften, have been published in his honour. The first, entitled Full of the Holy Spirit and Faith: Essays Presented in honour of Dr. Allison A. Trites, Pastor, Teacher, Scholar, appeared in 1997. The second, entitled You Will Be My Witnesses: A Festschrift in Honor of the Reverend Dr. Allison A. Trites, appeared in 2003, one  year after his retirement.

In all, Allison Trites served on the faculty of Acadia for 37 years, more than half of that time as the Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament. In appreciation of his many years of service, the graduating class made Professor Trites an honorary member of the Class of 2002. In 2002, he also had the honour of delivering the inaugural John Gladstone Sermon at the annual Commissioning Service.

Even in retirement, Dr. Trites has continued to teach, research, and write. Among some of these accomplishments was the publication of a learned commentary on the Gospel of Luke, which appeared in 2006.

In May 2012, Dr. Trites received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Acadia University.  That same weekend he preached for both the Acadia Divinity College Commissioning Service and the Acadia University Baccalaureate Service.  These events followed his successful leadership of a group tour to the Holy Land between April 28 and May 7, 2012.

Allison continues to serve as the Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Emeritus, and teaches in the Acadia Doctor of Ministry program.
